It is only seven years since the Josefwiese – Joseph’s meadow – was included in the inventory of protected gardens and open spaces of importance to the community. Designed by a garden inspector by the name of Rothpletz in 1924, it is the last oasis at the heart of the 5th, a kind of miniature Central Park surrounded by buildings belonging to cooperatives, the dominant arches of the viaduct and mature trees. Among the park’s regulars are the likewise mature boules players and, above all, the many young mothers who bring their infants here to let off  steam, but don’t let them – or their buggies – out of their sight for a second.
